What Risks Does a Creator Business Face?

If you earn money from content, brand deals, client work or sponsored posts, you're running a business, and that comes with business risks. Here are the common ones, in plain English.

Is a Creator Really a Business?

If your income depends on content, contracts, gear, client work or brand partnerships, yes. The SBA has issued guidance that groups qualifying creator businesses with other media businesses. It follows a proposed SBA rule that's open for comment through Nov. 20.

What Are the Most Common Risks?

  • Contract disputes. A brand or client says the work wasn't delivered as promised.
  • Content claims. Someone says your content used their music, image or idea, or harmed their reputation.
  • Proof of insurance. A brand, venue or client asks for it before you can start.
  • Gear. Cameras, audio gear and laptops used for paid work can be damaged, lost or stolen.
  • Cyber issues. A hacked account or lost files can stop your business.

Does a Personal Policy Handle This?

Often not. Personal and homeowners policies are usually written for personal life, not business work. Some of these risks may need different types of policies. Your agent can help you sort out what applies.

What Should You Do Now?

Jot down how you make money, who you work with, what gear you use and roughly what you earn. Then talk to your insurance agent.
