Why Creators Are a Market

Kamile Stuckey

When agents hear "creator," many picture one person with a phone and a following. Look closer and you'll find a whole group of small businesses: photographers, editors, coaches, designers, podcasters, instructors and more. Taken together, they're a market, and most agencies haven't started working it.

What Makes Creators a Market, Not a Niche?

A niche is one narrow type of client. Creators are spread across many kinds of work. Some make content, some build products, some advise or teach, and some run services for other businesses. What they share is how they earn: clients, brand deals, bookings and sales, often run by a small team or a single owner.

Why Is This Market Underserved?

Many creators never think of themselves as business owners, so they don't go looking for business insurance. Many agents see them as personal lines clients, so the conversation doesn't start from that side either. The result is a lot of real businesses that nobody has asked the right questions.

Where Do Agents Find Creator Clients?

Often, they're already close by: - In your book. Personal lines clients who "do content," freelance, or sell online. - In your community. Local photographers, studios, instructors and shops that market themselves online. - In your referral network. Accountants, attorneys and other small business owners who work with creators.

Our post on why your creator clients are small businesses covers how to see the business behind the content, and Three Risks Creators Don't See Coming covers where the conversation can start. To spot one in your book, use our five signs a creator is running a business.

What Does This Mean for Your Agency?

A market nobody else is serving well is a chance to be the first agent a creator trusts. You don't need a new specialty to begin. Curiosity, good questions, and treating their work like a business go a long way.

FAQ

Are creators a real market for insurance agents? Yes. Many creators run businesses with clients, contracts and income on the line, and they work across many kinds of creative, advisory and service work.

Why don't more agents work with creators? Creators often don't see themselves as business owners, and agents often see them as personal lines clients. That gap leaves many creator businesses without anyone asking about their business risks.

What is StudioGuard? StudioGuard is an upcoming program from Stuckey & Company built for creators who run their work as a business. It hasn't launched yet.
